List of lost pet websites for Philadelphia pet owners

I constantly see posts about someone losing their cat or dog, and each time neighbors mention a site or group where the owner should share their post.

So I decided to get as many links as I could and put them in one location. Please let me know if you know of a website, forum, or group whose focus is lost pets and I will update this article. Also, don’t forget to contact all the shelters and rescues in the city if your pet has gone missing.

Read my Where to Adopt a Cat or Dog article for the list of shelters in Philadelphia or my Pet Services Rates Philadelphia for a list f all pet services in the city.

Websites that focus on reuniting lost and found pets with their owners.

The 6 websites below help you to find your lost pet. Three are national-level sites and 3 are Philly based. Here are 3 general lost and found pet websites and I’m sure there are many more.

I don’t consider these sites as the best way to get your pet back. However, the last two Philly websites off a list of things you should do if you lost your pet so check out that information.

Many online articles list pure breeds as common dog breeds found in shelters. That occasionally is true but it’s rare that a breed that costs thousands of dollars will be found in a shelter. It’s more likely that you will find mixed breeds, difficult breeds or less “desirable” breeds. I looked at the available dogs in pet shelters in 5 major US cities and made a list of all the breeds up for adoption. Read on to see the numbers.

Most common breeds in 5 US city shelters

If you love dogs and have been in a shelter then you probably know which breed is the most common that is available for adoption. The surprising thing I found is that geography makes a difference.

I live in Philadelphia, PA so I looked at the Philadelphia SPCA. I also looked at dogs for adoption in the 4 biggest US cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. Philly is either the 5th of the 6th largest city by population.

I looked at the first adoption center I found with a simple Google search that also listed the breeds of dogs for adoption. Then I did a search on petfinder.com for the same 5 cities to compare the results. There were differences in breed counts but not much.

Then I added the totals for Pet Finder and each city shelter website. Note that there may be some dogs on Pet Finder that are also on the city sites, though I doubt there was a large duplication. I only looked at the 1st page of results on the Pet Finder site, and they quite often had 6 or more pages.

Top 10 dog breeds commonly found in shelters

Here are the totals for the top 10 dog breeds found in all 5 city searches, Petfinder included, out of 448 dogs total:

Terrier, Pit Bull mix: 155 total

Retriever mix (mostly Labs): 51

Chihuahua mix: 37

Shepherd mix 32

Terrier mix: 19

Hound mix: 16

Boxer mix: 14

Collie mix: 12

Mixed breed/unknown: 12

Dachshund mix: 10

I put “mix” on the dog breeds listed because that was the most common listing, though I did see pure breeds such as Boxers, Collies, German Shepherds, etc. I was surprised to see so many Labrador Retrievers and Chihuahuas on this list.

Adoptable dog breed totals by city

For each city, I did a search on Petfinder with a radius of 10 miles and I only looked at the 1st page of results. Some cities had dozens of pages of results on Pet Finder. I’ll add the link for each shelter for the different cities.

Final Thoughts

It’s sad seeing so many dogs in shelters, especially pit bulls which I know are super sweet dogs. But I’m sure most of the dogs in any shelter at any time would make a great pet, companion and best friend. If you have been considering adopting a dog, then do it – do it now!

If you want to know how to trim cat claws because your cat is slowly destroying your place realize that it may be difficult. Start by building trust with your cat by going slow and have lots of treats.

Cats claws are very sharp and they may not like you handling their paws. Start touching and massaging their paws so they get used to the contact.

While massaging their paws, press slightly to extend their claws. Keep doing that for a few days to warm them up for the clipping session.

How To Trim Cat Claws by Yourself or With Help

You need your cat to trust you and to be relaxed. Don’t try this with a cat that is agitated..

So you want to:

Be able to massage each toe of your cat

Then extend each claw to see the entire claw

Introduce the clipper and the sound it makes

And take your time and trim each claw with precision

Let’s start with getting your cat to trust you to inspect each paw.

Don’t Try to Restrain a Cat to Trim Their Claws

You don’t want to restrain them, you want to get them to relax. Most people suggest clipping a cat’s claws after they eat and are a little tired.

Definitely make the experience a pleasant one or it will be your last clipping session. Have a bad of cat treats beside you.

Massage & Examine Your Cat’s Paws

Sit down with your cat on your lap facing away from you. You want to examine each paw and claw. Gently massaging the paws will relx them, and you can press on the paws to extend the claws.

It also helps if you can pet her in her favorite spots like behind the neck or under the chin but that will be difficult unless you have someone helping you.

Both my cats tend to pull their paws out of my hand when I try this. Just keep doing it over and over. Break out the treats if your cat is being difficult. Stop if your cat resists.

The goal is to squeeze each toe to extend the claw. Most likely you will have to repeat this process a few of times over a day or two. In time your cat will get used to it and you can take it a step farther.

You have to examine the claw so that you can see the “quick.”. The quick is the pink part of the claw where there are nerves and blood vessels. It has a triangular shape near the base of the claw where the claw is the widest.

You NEVER want to trim the claw anywhere near the quick. If you do, it will be very painful for your cat and the claw will bleed.

You probably will not cut into the quick in the beginning because you will be super vigilant. Maintain your focus everytime you trim yout cat’s claws, especially as you become more experienced. You may get used to the process and not pay as close as attention as when you first started.

So get kitty to relax and so that you can extend and examine each claw. If you can do that then you can trim their claws.

The Details of How to Trim Cat Claws

So you have gotten your cat to relax and you have pressed on the toes to extend and examine each claw. Now you want to get the cat used to the look, smell & sound of the cat nail clippers.

First, place the nail clippers near your cat as you are massaging the toes and paws. Let her smell them. Easy enough. You also need your cat to hear the sound they make so grab some uncooked pasta.

What you want to do is clip the pasta while you are massaging the toes. Repetition is key so keep repeating it as many times as you need to relax your cat.

When you are finally ready, and able, to trim your cat’s claws, only cut the clear tip. Stay far away from the pink quick part of the claw (never cut the quick).

It is recommended to have styptic powder close if you do cut the quick. I disagree. That will put you in a failure mindset. Think success instead. Also, it’s not like your cat is going to stay on your lap when you cut into the quick causing her extreme pain.

Are you going to be able to pull her out of wherever she is hiding to apply the blood-clotting powder? Here is a better idea…never cut the quick.

The Details at the Moment of Clipping

Here are the basic steps on how to trim cat claws:

Have your cat on your lap facing away from you

Try doing this after meals, not when the cat is active

Pick a toe, massage it and extend the claw

Notice where the quick ends, trim below that point then release the toe

Note: make sure to cut the nail from top to bottom, not side to side or else you could crush the claw

Breathe a sigh of relief and try for another claw

Count yourself lucky if you can get 2 or more claws clipped in one session in the beginning. If you can trim two claws, then that is 5 sessions to trim all 10 (you don’t need to trim the claws on the back feet). You will have to repeat this about every 2-4 weeks.

Use lots of treats, praise, and petting during the process. It will get easier as your cat gets used to you trimming her claws.

This is a scissor type cat nail clipper

Types of Cat Nail Clippers

Regardless of the type or brand of cal nail clippers, make sure they are sharp. Dull clippers may squeeze the nail AND the quick causing pain and \ or splitting of the nail.

The clippers are dull if they don’t make a clean and easy cut. You ideally would want to have a second pair ready if the pair you are using isn’t sharp enough.

There are two basic types: scissor and guillotine. The scissor type cat nail\claw clippers are best for beginners. If you are reading this article, then get the scissor type. The guillotine type is best if you are already experienced clipping cat claws.

The other features you may want are a locking blade and ones made of stainless steel. You will have to replace them when they get dull unless you can have them sharpened.

Don’t use human nail clippers even though they will work. They are not as sharp and designed for a different purpose.

Here are three sites that review the best clippers. There are two scissor type clippers mentioned in all 3 pages: Safari Pro Nail Trimmer & Pet Republique. I would go with one of them.

Cat Grooming Services & Prices

Most groomers are geared towards grooming dogs but some also offer cat grooming services. If you are from Philadelphia, you can check out my article Dog & Pet Grooming Prices. I found 18 grooming companies and seven of them offer cat grooming services.

The price I found to trim cat claws was $10 for all the groomers that list prices on their websites. If you take your cat every two weeks, then that would be $260 for the year.

Summary

My opinion is to spend the money to have a professional groomer trim your cat’s claws. If you prefer to do it yourself, then buy the scissor type cat claw clippers. It really depends on how docile or aggressive your cat is.

You have to know how to properly trim the claws of your cat, because if you cut into the quick just one time, your cat may not let you try it again. Check the groomers in your area for your local rates.

I think you should let a professional trim your cat’s claws unless you have a docile cat. Good luck either way.

There are 31 pet-friendly hotels in Philadelphia and another 2 near the airport that allows dogs. Or you can choose B&B’s or more affordable motels located in or around the city.

You can choose from hotels in the heart of the city, which are the most expensive or use pet fees and policies as a guideline for other locations.

Whichever your choice, you will find accommodations for you and your dog while you visit Philadelphia from the many choices here.

Philadelphia Hotels: Dog & Pet-Friendly Hotels, Motels, B&Bs

The dog or pet-friendly hotels and other rentals below are separated first by hotels, then by motels, B&B’s and links to find other rentals. Within each section, I list the businesses by ascending zip code within different Philly neighborhoods.

I include room rates and pet fees, if applicable, which I mainly got from TripAdvisor and BringFido. The rates per night are the starting rate or on the low end of the per night rate.

These costs are subject to change as are the online review ratings which I also included. The address and phone number for each location are included just below the link to their website.

Hotels That Allow Dogs

The most options that I found when traveling with your dog are hotels. This was a very difficult article to research. Some of the websites are really slow and will lock up your system. Hopefully, you can reduce the number of sites you need to visit using this list of pet-friendly hotels, motels, and B&B’s.

The Top 6 Dog & Pet-Friendly Hotels in Philadelphia

Other Pet-Friendly Hotels: Essington \ Airport

Essington is a town in Delaware County and is immediately south of the airport. It is just below 19153 on the zip code map. You can get to Essington without getting on I-95, that is how close it is.

La Quinta Inn Philadelphia Airport
53 Industrial Hwy, Essington, PA 19029, 610-521-9800

Dog & Pet-Friendly Motels

It looks like Motel 6 is the only pet-friendly motel chain in or near Philadelphia. However, I wouldn’t stay at a Motel 6 or bring my dog to one. They don’t have great reviews but do have a lot of negative press. The choice is yours.

Motel 6 Philadelphia Northeast
11580 Roosevelt Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19118, 215-464-9500

Dog & Pet-Friendly Bed and Breakfast in Philadelphia

It’s difficult to include specific B&B’s since they are more likely to change over time than a large hotel or motel. Here are two that I’ve found and links to find more:

Cornerstone B&B Philadelphia
3300 Baring Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104, 215-387-6065
$180-256 per night. $35 pet fee per day. Google review = 4.3.

South Bridge Bed & Breakfast
2628 South Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148, 215-219-2682
$117 per night. Pet deposit and prior approval required. Google review = 3.9.

Pet-friendly Airbnb Philadelphia

Good luck trying to find B&B’s that are pet-friendly through Airbnb. They do not offer a search option for “pet” or “dog”, only reservation dates and the number of people or children.

I chose a date in the future and it returned 300 results. I was able to select a filter for Pets but the search button was “Show 300+ Homes”. So they are trying to push as many locations in your face as possible.

You should try narrowing the search to a particular date and zip code and then read each property description. I’m assuming if you are more specific in your search that it will reduce the # of results, hopefully way below 300.

BringFido Philadelphia

This is a great site but is kind of slow. It shows hotels, B&B’s and townhouse or apartment rentals. You are also shown a lot of results so it would be best to narrow the results with specific dates.

They have a review rating of “bones” instead of stars, so “5 bones” is good, 1 is bad. If there are no bones, that just means no one has added a review.

Flipkey

The search I ran listed 64 rentals from penthouses to apartments that are pet-friendly in Philadelphia. That is a much easier # of results to find a good rental for you and your dog.

Tripadvisor

I found 56 pet-friendly rentals here but I’d be surprised if they were all unique from the Flipkey results.

Booking.com

I found a bed & breakfast that is pet-friendly called BnB Antiques & Art Gallery & 4 pet-friendly townhouses.

One other option is to board your dog with a local pet sitter or daycare service. Take a look at my article Dog Boarding Cost in Philadelphia for a list of 13 pet service companies that will board your dog in their home or at their daycare center.

You can also look into dog daycare. This would be for when you want to spend a lot of time at a specific place (Art Museum, Independence Hall, etc.) and not have to worry about going back to walk your dog.

Note, the dog daycare will have to test your dog to make sure he\she is dog-friendly But if you know you have a friendly dog, this may help you spend more time seeing the city.

If you are interested in this service, check out my Doggy Daycare Cost article for a list of all dog daycare locations in the city.

Enjoy Your Stay in Philly & Bring Your Dog

I hope you are able to find an affordable pet-friendly hotel, motel or B&B while you are visiting Philadelphia. And if you have time, go for a hike with your dog along the Schuylkill River Trail or in the Wissahickon Park.

Comment below if you have anything to add or if you have stayed at any of the locations in this article. I’m sure other people would like to hear about your experience.

Also, I have an article on the rates and cost for every type of pet service. The article is called Pet Services Rates but it also includes other subjects like Philly dog parks, pet-friendly hotels, 24-hour emergency vets, and adoption locations. Check it out if you are interested in other pet services located in the city.

This is the last of my pet services articles for the city of Philadelphia, and one service that hopefully you will never need. There are two 24 hour emergency vet hospitals in Philadelphia, and another five in surrounding counties. I have the phone #, address and a Google map for each hospital. You can click the Google map and enter your location to get directions to each hospital.

“I Need a 24 Hour Emergency Vet Hospital”

Hopefully, you will never make that statement. But if you do, you absolutely should know where the closest 24-7 emergency vet hospital is and how to get there.

There are two 24 hour emergency vet hospitals in Philadelphia: Penn and VSEC. But they may not be that close if you live near Southwest or Northeast Philadelphia,

I also found 5 emergency vet hospitals in surrounding counties. Two of them are in New Jersey, the other 3 are in three different counties bordering Philadelphia.

If you need a map for a specific emergency vet hospital RIGHT NOW, then click on the hospital name below to go directly to the map for that location:

I hope this article helps you if you are ever in need of an emergency vet hospital. Though I sincerely hope you never need one. If you are looking for a veterinarian, I have an article on 32 vets in Philadelphia that you may be interested in reading. I include the Yelp & Google review ratings.

Also, I have an article on the rates and cost for every type of pet service.
