The in-person option is to go to ACCT itself or to an approved dog licensing location.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Getting a Philadelphia Dog License in Person<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>In person<\/strong><\/span> is the quickest option. Take a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/license.acctphilly.org\/index.php?main_page=page&amp;id=17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Purchase a Dog License in Person<\/u><\/a> page on the Animal Control Website to see a listing of locations.\u00a0They have links to 34 locations. A lot of the locations are vets, shelters or groomers. There is an interactive Google map to help you find the closest location.<\/p>\n<h3>Mailing Your Dog License Application<\/h3>\n<p>You can also choose to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>mail <\/strong><\/span>in the application but this method takes 8-12 weeks. Just <a href=\"http:\/\/license.acctphilly.org\/docs\/licenseapplication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>download the application<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and fill it out completely. Include proof of rabies vaccination along with a check or money order. They will not return any paperwork that you give them, so make sure to only send copies. Here is the mailing address<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Animal Care &amp; Control Team<br \/>\nAttn: Dog Licensing<br \/>\nPO Box 46865<br \/>\nPhiladelphia, PA 19160<\/p>\n<h3>How to Apply Online for Your Dog License<\/h3>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>online <\/strong><\/span>Philadelphia dog license application also takes 8-12 weeks to process. It takes that long supposedly because of the volume of application. I\u2019d say it\u2019s the bureaucracy of government.<\/p>\n<p>Just fill out the fields and upload digital copies of the required documents. You need to upload proof of rabies vaccination for each option. The Altered options also require a spay\\neuter certificate. For the senior discount options, you also need to upload proof of age (driver\u2019s license e.g.) There are four options of online applications:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/license.acctphilly.org\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=65&amp;products_id=186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Annual Dog License, Altered<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/license.acctphilly.org\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=65&amp;products_id=184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Annual Dog License, Altered (senior discount)<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/license.acctphilly.org\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=65&amp;products_id=185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Annual Dog License, Unaltered<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/license.acctphilly.org\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=65&amp;products_id=187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Annual Dog License, Unaltered (senior discount)<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>See below for information about the dog license code, costs, and further information about\u00a0getting\u00a0a Philadelphia dog license application.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>The Philadelphia Dog License Code<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Philadelphia Animal Control (ACCT Philly) has a simple paragraph on the city dog licensing code on their <a href=\"http:\/\/license.acctphilly.org\/index.php?main_page=page&amp;id=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Philadelphia Dog License FAQ <\/u><\/a>page.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a summary of code 10-103 (Licensing and Rabies Vaccination). I am not a lawyer, I just read the code and paraphrased it into the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All dogs that are 4 months or older need to have a dog license in Philadelphia.<\/li>\n<li>*You have 30 days to buy a dog license after adopting a dog 4 months or older.<\/li>\n<li>You have 30 days to buy a dog license after moving into Philadelphia.<\/li>\n<li>Senior citizens (65 or older) get a 50% discount towards licensing their dog(s).<\/li>\n<li>Dog license fees for guide dogs (or service animals) are waived (no charge).<\/li>\n<li>Your dog must have proof of vaccination for rabies to receive a dog license.<\/li>\n<li>A dog must have the license tag on its collar at all times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*I was not required to buy a Philadelphia dog license when I adopted my dog in 2010 and he was approximately 1-1\/2 years old. That may not be the case now.<\/p>\n<p>See the last sentence in paragraph 7 of section <a href=\"http:\/\/library.amlegal.com\/nxt\/gateway.dll\/Pennsylvania\/philadelphia_pa\/title10regulationofindividualconductanda?f=templates$fn=default.htm$3.0$vid=amlegal:philadelphia_pa$anc=JD_10-103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>10-103<\/u><\/a>. It mentions that no dog shall be released unless the person adopting the dog submits \u201ca license application and application fee.\u201d That language sounds stern.<\/p>\n<p>I think rescues and shelters are more concerned with the adoption than the license application. So you may be able to adopt a dog without the application and fee as I did. But things may have changed since then, so don&#8217;t quote me on that. Eventual you have to get one.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><b>The Paperwork You Need &amp; How Much it Costs<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You must have a certificate of vaccination for rabies from a veterinarian. You won\u2019t get a license without the certificate. The costs of a Philadelphia dog license are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>License for an altered Dogs (spayed \\ neutered) is $16.<\/li>\n<li>Unaltered Dogs fee is $40.<\/li>\n<li>Senior Pet Owners (65 years+) fee is a 50% discount ($8 altered, $20 unaltered).<\/li>\n<li>Service Dogs: Free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on the fees, you will also need proof of spay\\neuter for the altered dog license fee, and proof of age for the senior discount.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>Reasons to Have a License for Your Dog<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It is mandatory to have a license for your dog in Philadelphia, and I assume for most cities. So that&#8217;s the first reason.<\/p>\n<p>But besides avoiding fines for not having a license, the main reason is if you lose your dog. Though I\u2019m not sure how people \u201close\u201d their dog.<\/p>\n<p>I sometimes lose, or misplace, my keys or cell phone, but I\u2019ve never lost my dog. Though my dog whimpers if he doesn\u2019t know where I am (love that boy).<\/p>\n<p>If your dog gets away from you for whatever reason, then having a dog license tag on his collar will help reunite you with him. Philadelphia Animal Control can use their license database to contact you.<\/p>\n<p>I often see posts about a stray dog being spotted, sometimes with a collar. People in my neighborhood often hold onto the dog and contact ACCT or local shelters. The owner and dog are often reunited without involving animal control.<\/p>\n<p>If you do \u201close\u201d your dog, it\u2019s a great idea to add another tag on his collar that has your phone number. Take a look at my article on <a href=\"https:\/\/fairmountpetservice.com\/Blog\/pet-services-blog\/first-time-dog-owner-17-tips-new-dog-owners\/\">17 tips for first-time dog owners<\/a> for additional safeguards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>Lifetime Dog License in Philadelphia<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You used to be able to pay a higher fee and get a permanent license for the life of your dog, but I think that is no longer possible. Here is paragraph 2 under code 10-103:<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3159 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fairmountpetservice.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lifetime-Dog-License-2.png\" alt=\"Philadelphia dog license: lifetime dog license in Philadelphia\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fairmountpetservice.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lifetime-Dog-License-2.png 450w, https:\/\/fairmountpetservice.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lifetime-Dog-License-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whew! That is a tough paragraph to read. But it sounds like permanent licenses are available.<\/p>\n<p>However, I applied for a permanent license a year after I adopted my dog because I heard that permanent licenses were no longer going to be available. I think that was around 2011 and I wasn\u2019t told about going back a year later to get the permanent license. Thanks for not sharing!<\/p>\n<p>Either permanent dog licenses are available again, section 10-103 paragraph 2 is wrong, or I misunderstand that goofy paragraph. Just ask if lifetime dog licenses are still available when you apply for your dog\u2019s license. Or comment below if you are fluent in legalize.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think it\u2019s available anymore.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><b>Lost Tags and Tag Renewals<\/b><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can get a replacement tag if you lose the one given to you when your application was approved. Make sure you write down the license tag # and the date it was issued.<\/p>\n<p>Provide that information along with your name, address, and your dog\u2019s name. A replacement tag costs $2. Just <a href=\"http:\/\/license.acctphilly.org\/index.php?main_page=contact_us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contact<\/a> them if you need a replacement tag.<\/p>\n<p>The Philadelphia dog license is valid for one year. You will need to apply for a new tag, and once again, provide proof of vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Vaccinate your dog and don\u2019t lose him.
